Alabama Leaves No Doubt

Going into last night’s BCS championship game between LSU and Alabama, it was possible to envision a scenario where the Crimson Tide didn’t win convincingly enough for some voters, opening up the possibility some would rank Oklahoma State, or even leave LSU, at the top of the poll.

However, with their dominant 21-0 defeat of the previously undefeated and #1 ranked Tigers, Alabama left little-to-no doubt they’re the best team in the land. While not a unanimous #1 in the final Leatherheads poll–Oklahoma State earned one #1 vote–clearly our pollsters collectively agreed with that sentiment.

LSU’s unimpressive showing in New Orleans did leave the door open for Oklahoma State to slide into the #2 spot, which they did by the slimmest of margins, on the strength of their 41-38 Fiesta Bowl victory over #7 Stanford. Despite maintaining a hold on the #1 spot for 10 of the 11 weeks we conducted our poll during the regular season–and only falling to #2 the one time they weren’t on top–LSU falls to #3.

Rounding out the top ten are #4 Oregon, 45-38 Rose Bowl victors over #9 Wisconsin; #5 Boise State, who defeated Arizona State 56-24 in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas; #6 Arkansas, 29-16 winners versus Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl; #8 South Carolina, who dominated Nebraska 30-13 in the Capital One Bowl; and #10 USC, who sat at home for bowl season due to being on probation.

I want to thank all the Leatherheads voters who participated in our poll this year, whose consistency and reliability made my job of compiling the rankings all the more enjoyable. Just as, if not more importantly, though, I’d also like to thank those of you who read these posts and made this endeavor a moderate success.

We’ll see you next year!
